Epilepsy & Society Programme
An exciting programme that will be of great interest to both individuals living with epilepsy and for staff from community organisations supporting people living with epilepsy is scheduled for Thursday 21st October. This programme has been developed by local and regional committees of the International Bureau for Epilepsy.A well regarded group of presenters includes widely published sociologist Graham Scambler from University of Central London and the popular Australian television sports presenter and author Wally Lewis. The main topics focus on “epilepsy and stigma”, “employment and advocacy” and “SUDEP”.
A series of workshops explore “memory and epilepsy”, “epilepsy and sexuality”, “epilepsy, sport and exercise”, “practical ways to manage depression” and “epilepsy and art”. In addition there will be the outstanding persons with epilepsy awards allowing for individuals to share their personal experiences of living with epilepsy and also the launch of two books “Social Epileptology” edited by Christine Walker and Jaya Pinikahana and “Epilepsy in the Family” a new title by Suzanne Yanko. Delegates are invited to stay for the welcome ceremony of the congress and the reception that follows later that evening.

Registration fees are US$70 until 8th October and US$90 onsite.
On Friday 22nd October, there is an optional tour available to all attendees that will visit the Healesville Sanctuary and vineyards in spectacular countryside surrounding Melbourne. Healsesville Sanctuary is the perfect place to spot native animals in their natural surroundings. You can see wedge-tailed eagles, dingoes, koalas, wombats, reptiles, and more, all while strolling through the bushland. In the afternoon you will visit a nearby vineyard where you will get the opportunity to taste the wines on offer while learning all about Australian grapes. Lunch is provided in a winery restaurant; a glass of wine is included.
This full day tour costs US$110 inclusive of lunch. Please note that this tour is subject to a minimum of 20 participants. Should the tour be cancelled due to insufficient numbers, you will receive a full refund for the tour and be offered a sightseeing tour of Melbourne instead.
